DESCRIPTION OF WORK In this position, you will guide and assist veterans throughout the entire process of claiming benefits. You will prepare applications for benefits that meet the legal requirements of each type of benefit. Veterans will be represented and advocated for in the process of preparing, presenting, and securing their claims, which is part of your responsibility. You will interview veterans to help them develop their benefits claims and assist them in gathering the evidence they need to make successful claims. In addition, you will communicate with medical professionals to obtain the medical evidence required for claims and supply them with the necessary forms, including HIPAA waivers, to guarantee a successful claims process.

Work from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a 45-minute lunch break, for a full-time position with a 37.5-hour work week
Telework: You might be able to work full-time from home (telework). You must work from an approved Pennsylvania location and have a securely configured high-speed internet connection in order to telework. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Minimum Experience and Education Requirements:

one year as a Veterans Services Specialist with the DMVA (the commonwealth title); or five years of experience analyzing and determining people’s eligibility for public assistance or benefits. or a bachelor’s degree in human services, business administration, public administration, or a related field and one year of experience analyzing and determining people’s eligibility for public benefits or services programs; or a similar combination of training and experience.

Particular Needs:
Within one year of starting work, all positions in this position must have valid accreditation as a veterans service officer from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or be eligible for accreditation.

Further Requirements:
You must be capable of carrying out essential job duties.

Preference (but not required) Qualifications:
familiarity with the methods of interviewing that are used to gather data for public assistance programs and the criteria that must be met to be eligible for them
ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, as well as to establish and maintain productive working relationships
Possessing a Class C driver’s license and the willingness to travel, which may necessitate overnight stays at short notice
